Distilled in 2017, aged for 3 years and bottled at full proof, this is one of six exclusive bottlings, released in 2020 to commemorate Velier’s historical seat, “Villa Paradisetto”. The label was created by the artist and long-time collaborator Warren Khong, who also created the labels for the Drop by Drop series to commemorate Velier's 70th anniversary and for some Karuizawa limited edition selected by La Maison du Whisky.
THE BRAND
Privateer distillery was established in Boston in 2011, even though for many, its history began a long time ago, even with the corsairs in the second half of the 18th century. Andrew Cabot, the founder’s ancestor who bears the same name after six generations, was a rum distiller and successful American privateer during the American Revolution, with a fleet of more than twenty-five ships included the True American, from which one of their rum takes the name.
The production, directed by master distiller Maggie Campbell, embodies the revolutionary spirit of the privateers, choosing to distill ignoring the common practices of American producers.
Only the best ingredients like grade A molasses from the US or biodynamic molasses from Guatemala, double distillation, no sweetener and no filtration. Aging in American oak barrels and bottling in accordance with the Bottled in Bond Act of 1897, primarly intented for whisky, that guarantees the product is from a distillery and distilled in a single season.
THE BOTTLER
Velier was founded by the Chaix family in Genova in 1947 as a small traditional company specialised in the importation and distribution of wines, champagnes and spirits. In 1983, a young Luca Gargano, former brand ambassador for Saint James at that time, acquired shares in Velier. Under his influence the company began spacialising in the importation of outstanding spirits exclusively destinated to the Italian market. By the early 90s Luca heard about a legendary stock of Saint James rum dating back probably to 1885 and bottled in 1952. After a complex negotiation, he finally managed to acquire the entire stock. This was only the first of a list of legendary selections to come in the following years.
